Haacht Brewery is a one hundred percent Belgian and independent family brewery that emanates brewing fun and always provides a personal and authentic touch. The brewery’s main ingredients? Pride and passion for the craft, which is characteristic in all their drinks. Haacht Brewery has more than 125 years of experience and is a well-known brand in the world’s best beer country.
The brewery produces a diverse range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as being an exclusive distributor and bottler of Pepsi products for over 30 years. With a deep respect for tradition and innovation, Haacht Brewery continues to craft high-quality beverages that celebrate Belgian brewing heritage.
Through our collaboration, ClimateCamp supported Haacht Brewery in calculating its Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprint and is now helping the brewery assess what is required to set CO2 reduction targets. For this interview, we spoke with Laura Heveraet (Process Engineer) who supervises this project at Haacht Brewery.
Before partnering with ClimateCamp, Haacht Brewery were already implementing sustainability initiatives across various areas of their brewery. However, they had never conducted a full carbon footprint calculation. As they began compiling their sustainability report, they recognized the need to explore this aspect further. Following a recommendation from a mutual connection, they turned to ClimateCamp to support them in this process.
Calculating emissions came with several challenges. While Scope 1 and 2 calculations were relatively straightforward due to the availability of well-structured financial data, measuring Scope 3 required significant adjustments. For example, the brewery traditionally tracked goods using a piece-based system, but carbon footprint calculations require weight-based data, which meant having to weigh lots of different goods. During the step-by-step process it also became clear that Haacht Brewery would need to take steps to improve digitization, fragmentation and detail of transportation data before it could be processed.
The main goal for Haacht Brewery was to obtain an accurate carbon footprint measurement for the last couple of years. Starting from last year, they wanted to assess the requirements for committing to CO2 reduction targets. Achieving the latter requires a highly precise footprint analysis.
ClimateCamp has supported Haacht Brewery in calculating its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and is working toward integrating supplier-specific data. It supported Haacht Brewery in collecting or processing the required data, leading to clear emission insights and a stronger foundation for setting sustainability targets. As one of ClimateCamp’s early adopters, Haacht Brewery also played a pivotal role in providing the data for developing the platform and improving our functionalities.
Due to its size, employing over 350 people, Haacht Brewery falls under the corporate framework for target-setting. Because of this complexity we are working closely together to analyze what the requirements of this commitment mean and what steps are necessary.
As early adopters, we valued the collaborative approach ClimateCamp took — working together on navigating emissions calculation as well as supplier engagement to move from basic emissions calculations to actionable insights."
Many suppliers have already been engaged to provide primary emissions data, and Haacht Brewery can now review their carbon maturity directly on the platform. In the coming years, we’ll continue to work closely with suppliers—not only to encourage more of them to calculate and share their data, but also to combine primary and secondary data into actionable insights that support Haacht Brewery’s emission reduction plans.
