Discover how Duvel Moortgat keeps sustainability at its core through its partnership with ClimateCamp

Introduction

Duvel Moortgat is a fourth-generation, family-owned Belgian brewery known for its craftsmanship and long-term vision. Founded in 1871, the company has grown from a local brewery in Puurs-Sint-Amands into an international group with iconic brands such as Duvel, Chouffe, Vedett, and Liefmans. Throughout its 150-year history, Duvel Moortgat has remained guided by the same principles: passion for quality, respect for tradition, and constant innovation.

Sustainability is a natural extension of that philosophy. The brewery’s success depends on the purity of its ingredients and the health of its ecosystems. Duvel Moortgat focuses on building a resilient, low-impact value chain through renewable energy, CO₂ recuperation, circular packaging, and regenerative agriculture.

With its future-oriented mindset, the company sees sustainability not only as a duty but as a way to protect what makes its beers exceptional. Partnering with ClimateCamp allows Duvel Moortgat to deepen its understanding of supply-chain emissions, strengthen Scope 3 accounting, and accelerate progress toward its science-based reduction goals.

Their challenge

Duvel Moortgat had already completed Scope 1 and 2 calculations before ClimateCamp and had previously launched a first Scope 3 project as well. The next step was to significantly increase the accuracy of its Scope 3 results by adding primary data from suppliers, whilst at the same time ensuring its auditability.

As Sustainability Controller, Dries is responsible for gathering and validating data across all brewery entities and coordinating with suppliers. Together with sustainability director Peter Willaert one of his tasks was to ensure that their GHG inventory and supplier data would be robust enough to withstand internal and external scrutiny as well as align with their Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements.

Duvel Moortgat is a leader on sustainability, and as such has set amibitous climate targets (from a 2019 baseline year):

  • Scope 1 & 2: 42 % reduction by 2030
  • 25 % fossil-based Scope 3 reduction and 30.3 % reduction in FLAG emissions by 2030

Here you can read their full sustainability report.

However, to achieve these goals required better understanding of their value chain. They were looking for:

  • A structured and scalable platform to collect and integrate carbon data such as Corporate and Product Carbon Footprints (CCF & PCF) from key suppliers — reducing workload for purchasing teams.
  • Calculation and analytical support to improve data accuracy, for example in transport-related emissions.
  • A supplier onboarding process designed to minimize effort and friction for suppliers.
  • Deeper insights into high-impact categories such as glass manufacturing, malt, and other key materials.

Climatecamp's solution

Duvel Moortgat partnered with ClimateCamp to bring structure, speed, and consistency to its Scope 3 journey. The collaboration focused on improving data quality, engaging suppliers, and translating primary data into insights that form the basis for a future reduction roadmap.

Key elements of the solution:

  • Value-chain visibility: ClimateCamp mapped Duvel’s Scope 3 footprint and supplier network to identify major emission drivers.
  • Supplier engagement: The combination of ClimateCamp’s platform and human-steerded onboarding process, suppliers were invited to share data in a secure, low-effort way.
  • Auditable data collection: The platform ensured traceable, verifiable data inputs for each emission source, making internal and external reporting more robust.
  • Collaborative process: Each value chain is different and poses unique challenges for carbon accounting. Together, Climatecamp and Duvel learned to tackle the Scope 3 subject matter better, translating into targeted improvements to the platform.
We needed more than just a calculation platform because suppliers don't always have the necessary data, documentation or knowledge and ClimateCamp proved to be a great partner in collecting this primary data.

Results

By working with ClimateCamp, Duvel Moortgat has achieved a more detailed, accurate, and auditable understanding of its Scope 3 emissions. The company now has:

  • A structured and auditable Scope 3 inventory
  • Streamlined supplier engagement processes, reducing workload for internal teams.
  • Enhanced insights into high-impact materials such as glass and malt.
  • A scalable platform to track supplier progress on carbon maturity and reduction

Beyond compliance, the partnership positions Duvel Moortgat for long-term impact:

  • Clear and auditable reporting for customers, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
  • A straightforward platform and way of working to reduce workload in supplier collaboration whilst keeping quality high.
  • A strong reduction roadmap, connecting climate action directly to product quality and brand resilience.
